Divided Commissioners Deny Byron SPLOST $$$
By Victor Kulkosky News Editor
By a 3-2 vote Tuesday night, the Peach County Board of Commissioners voted to deny a request by the City of Byron to amend the intergovernmental agreement governing distribution of 2000 SPLOST funds.
Byron originally planned to use its $4.5 million allotment of the 2000 SPLOST to build a new wastewater treatment plant to replace its aging and overtaxed facilities. Recently, Byron reached an agreement with Macon's water and sewer agency through which Byron would send up to two million gallons of wastewater per day to Macon's sewerage facilities. The city plans to use its Splost funds to build a line that would connect with Macon's sewerage system.
Byron, the city of Fort Valley, the Fort Valley Utility Commission and the Peach County Water & Sewerage authority have already voted to amend the intergovernmental agreement governing how the 2000 Splost funds can be spent. The funds can't be disbursed without the agreement of all five parties including the County Commissioners. The vote on Tuesday night prevents that.
Commissioners Melvin Walker, Michael Dinkins and Walter Smith voted not to amend the intergovernmental agreement, while Martin Moseley and Roy Lewis voted in favor.
